At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the wind across the lone tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy here opted to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no beast.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
